The assassination of Russia's ambassador to Turkey was a "terror attack," a spokeswoman for Russia's foreign ministry said. "Today is a tragic day in the history of the Russian Federation. During a public event, Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov got wounded and died later. We qualify what happened as a terror attack. We are currently in contact with Turkish authorities who are assuring us that a thorough, comprehensive investigation will be conducted," foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in remarks broadcast on Russian television. "Murderers will be punished. Terrorism won't sustain. We'll fight it. A memory about this outstanding diplomat will always remain in our hearts. He's a diplomat who's contributed a lot in fighting terrorism during his career."

The Philippines has signed a contract with South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the building of two new warships in a P15.7-billion deal, the single most expensive project approved by the Duterte administration to date. In a statement, the Navy said Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana led the contract signing on Monday for the construction and delivery of the new frigates. The notice of award was received by HHI last month with the amount of $336,912,000 or equivalent to P15,744,571,584. The frigates, each displacing 2,600 tons, will be propelled by a combined diesel and diesel system that will give it speeds of up to 25 knots, according to a news release on HHI’s website. Measuring 107 meters in length, the frigates will be armed with missiles, torpedoes, guns and electronic sensors that will allow it to conduct anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, the HHI release added. Russia’s Air Base in Karelia has received a squadron of the latest Sukhoi Su-35S fighters. The state of the art planes will be deployed less than 200km away from the Finnish border to protect Russia’s northwestern frontier. Four jets and their crews traveled over 8,000 km from the Far East, refueling three times at airfields in the Central and Eastern military districts, the Russian Defense Ministry announced. The planes are now getting ready for deployment. The Su-35 is a multidimensional high-maneuverable fighter of 4++ generation with thrust-vectoring modules. The Sukhoi Su-35 remains the top Russian air fighter in service today. Its technical characteristics allow the plane to evade missiles or dogfight at close ranges. On the second day of the maneuvers, the army has successfully test-fired newly developed Toofan interceptor missiles. A domestically-made hand-launched drone was also unveiled in the drill. The drone called Farpaad can cause disruption to other drones within the range of three kilometers and gets them out of control. The exercises are aimed at increasing readiness and mobility of military units in response to potential threats. The ground forces' operations are supported by the Air Force and Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base. Iran frequently holds military maneuvers aimed at increasing its defensive capabilities.
